What happens when you approach everything with curiosity? For me, it turned a frustrating job managing Oracle RAC databases into a career spent building distributed systems, shaping open source communities, and founding a company. This talk is about how curiosity became the engine of growth in my career. Along the way, I’ll share stories of scaling databases, surviving split-brains, embracing Kafka, and now wrestling with the hidden complexity of AI and serverless. At a time when the pressure is to be ever more efficient, I want to inspire you to take the opposite path: approach your work with a learning mindset. Curiosity is inefficient by design, but it’s how we build expertise, taste, and the capacity to create systems worth using and sustaining.
