Uncovering My Holocaust Legacy: Using LLMs for Historical Exploration

My grandmother mentioned she had never read any of her father’s articles. I thought: “No way.” He was a well-known journalist in his time, the dark 1930s. Even with everything that happened, the war, the displacement, the loss... Even with all of those there’s just no chance that everything was gone. I was set to find his writings online, expecting an easy task. It was easy... I embarked on a journey, blending personal history with the power of modern AI. Using Large Language Models like ChatGPT, I explored digitized Yiddish archives to uncover my great-grandfather’s writings, reclaiming a piece of my own legacy. This talk highlights the process, the challenges, and the emotional impact of using AI in a profoundly personal context, while exploring broader implications for historical research and personal deep dives.
